If Penelope's voice were fine, she would have argued with Simon, telling him every single disgusting thing Anna had done to her.
But her throat hurt, and she wasn't going to waste her voice on such trivial matters.
She simply played the recording of Anna and Zebulon setting her up for Louis. With that evidence, she could have had Anna sent to jail, let alone just slapping her once.
The more Simon listened, the more horrified he became. He was terrified of what could have happened. If things had gone wrong, he couldn't even imagine what Theodore would have done. The Flores family would never have been able to withstand his wrath.
Everyone else also felt a chill run down their spines. Anna's actions were truly malicious.
Theodore's face had long since darkened. He didn't say anything threatening, just a simple, "Simon, take your sister home. She is not welcome here."
The words weren't harsh, but they carried a heavy weight.
What could Simon say? He knew how Theodore treated outsiders. It was only because of their friendship that Theodore hadn't dealt with Anna on the spot.
But Simon had to do something. He first bowed deeply to Penelope, then pushed Anna in front of her, forcing her to apologize sincerely.
Anna was already pale with fear, repeating "I'm sorry, I was wrong, I'll never do it again."
Penelope sighed. It was the day before her wedding, and Simon was one of Theodore's best friends. She couldn't make the scene too ugly. Simon stood up, took Anna's hand, and smiled at her.
"Penelope, I will definitely give you a proper explanation..."
Simon was about to say more, but Penelope shook her head and gestured for him to let her walk Anna out.
"No, I'll take her."
Penelope grunted and shoved a stack of balloons into Simon's hands, signaling that he hadn't finished his work and couldn't slack off.
"I'm really sorry about this."
"You have the nerve to talk about this!" Anna finally snapped.
Penelope sighed. "So I guessed right."
Combining what Hannah had told her with her own deductions, she had hit the mark.
"Are you proud of yourself? First Gary, then Zebulon, and now Theodore. I have to admire your talent for collecting men!" Anna screamed, losing her composure.
Penelope shook her head. "I don't know Gary."
"You still won't admit it..."
"What is there to admit? I don't know him. The fact that he claimed to love me, confessed to me, and then dropped out of school were his own actions. Did I ever acknowledge him? Did you ever see us together?"
