The Year I Was the Other Woman To Myself novel Chapter 280

"What are you trying to say?"

"Gary didn't drop out of university because I rejected him or because he was heartbroken. He dropped out because he was sick. He has a very serious illness—cerebellar atrophy."

Penelope took out her phone and showed Anna a photo Hannah had sent her. Hannah had visited Gary's family on a business trip last month and taken the picture.

In the photo, Gary was shrunken in a wheelchair, so thin he was just skin and bones. His hair was long and unkempt, his eyes were vacant, and he couldn't even focus on the camera.

"No, that's not him!" Anna's eyes widened in disbelief.

"That's him," Penelope said grimly. "I'm guessing he lied because he didn't want to be a burden to you."

"No, that's not it! You're lying to me!"

"I have no reason to lie to you!"

Penelope held the photo in front of Anna again. "You loved him so much, didn't you? You hated me and sought revenge on me because of him. Based on what you did to me, your love for him must still be strong. Now that you know the truth, you can go find him. Maybe he's waiting for you, and you two can finally be together."

"That's not him! That's not Gary!" Anna shook her head violently.

"You know it's him. He just doesn't look like the man you loved anymore. But you're so devoted, you wouldn't mind that he's sick, would you?"

"Penelope!"

"I even have his phone number. I can call him for you right now."

Penelope made a move to dial.

Anna lunged at her. "Don't call! We broke up a long time ago! I... I'm not going to see him! I can't accept him like this!" she screamed, breaking down completely.

Penelope didn't actually have Gary's number. It was just a bluff to force Anna to admit that her love wasn't as deep as she thought.

"He was your first love, wasn't he? First loves are beautiful and worth cherishing. But can you still cherish this memory now? He did so much for you, but you can't accept him as he is now. You never loved him that much. Your love isn't noble!"

"Stop it! I don't want to hear it!"

As she was wondering what was going on, Ward emerged from her house with several police officers.

"That's her! That's Penelope! Arrest her! Don't let her get away!"

Before Penelope could react, several officers surrounded her.

"Are you Penelope Laurier?" one of them asked.

Though confused, Penelope nodded.

"The Stone Group has filed a report accusing you of embezzling company funds during your employment. Please come with us to the station to cooperate with our investigation."

"I embezzled company funds?"

Penelope looked at Ward in shock. He met her gaze with a look of pure malice.

He mouthed the words silently: "This is what you get for crossing the Sullivan family!"
