"I didn't want my family to know my sister's gone, so I registered Bonnie under my name," Hunter solemnly explained.
"If they learn that my sister's gone and that she gave birth to Bonnie, they'd take her away."
Hunter would never allow that to happen. He refused to hand Bonnie over to such a cold and heartless family and wouldn't let her grow up living the same life he'd endured.
But Noelle misunderstood and assumed that he was hiding Maeve's death to spare the Haberkorns' grief. Either way, her heart ached for Bonnie. She was starting to feel guilty now as she recalled how she'd repeatedly ignored Bonnie's affection.
Hunter apologetically said, "Bonnie adores you. Sometimes she might be a little too enthusiastic and feel almost like a burden, but I'll remind her to give you space.
"I've spoiled her, so she can be… a little willful at times."
"Spoiled?" Noelle thought. Bonnie seemed almost too well-behaved.
She guiltily said, "It's fine. I like Bonnie too, so she can call me Mommy if she wants."
She told herself it didn't matter since she'd be at the intensive training camp and hardly see Bonnie. Deep down, she made a silent promise to herself to always respond to Bonnie's messages from now on and never disappoint the latter.
Even before learning the truth, she'd always found Bonnie adorable. If Bonnie were truly her daughter, she would go to sleep with a smile on her face.
Hunter heaved a sigh of relief before shifting the subject to Shannon's situation after being brought to the police station last night.
"At first, she denied everything, but Nicola's recorded evidence nailed her down. She tried to drag Jayden into it, but the police investigation found no proof that he was involved in the poisoning, so she'll be detained for now.
"The final sentencing will depend on what the court decides."
Though it was an attempted poisoning, the punishment might not be heavy since Noelle wasn't harmed. Coupled with Shannon's influential family background, the incident would likely be swept under the rug.
Still, the intensive training camp had decided on a consequence that Shannon would be expelled. To Noelle, that expulsion was punishment enough.
"Though members of Turbolt Racing are under her lead, quite a number of them have solid skills. They were compelled to follow her.
"I'll talk to Coach Landaal about them after I get back."
She paused, suddenly remembering that Hunter was no longer her coach, so why was she telling him all that?
Yet a smile sparkled in his eyes, and he was clearly beaming with joy.
Flustered, she added, "I'll return to the intensive training camp this afternoon. Thanks for checking on me."
Noelle immediately jerked her head away to dodge his kiss, while Juned had already led Bonnie away, and the door slammed shut.
The thought of her own nervousness amused her and brought a soft chuckle to her lips. In the next moment, Hunter lifted her chin and captured her lips in a deep, demanding kiss.
He nipped at her lip almost punishingly, and Noelle let out a soft groan. When her fingers tapped lightly against his chest, it seemed to spur him on and drove him into a deeper kiss.
His skills had clearly improved, but his self-control hadn't. Before long, his whole body was burning with heat.
Noelle recalled rumors that he hadn't let a woman close for years and wondered if he might still be a virgin. For some reason, her ears flushed to an unusual shade of red.
Holding her tightly, Hunter fought to control his body's response. Noelle felt a twinge of sympathy, but she couldn't possibly take things further here or now.
Deep down, she was almost gloating. He'd wanted to kiss when she'd avoided her lips, and now, he'd have to suffer for it.
Still, Hunter's lips found hers again, as if trying to reclaim every kiss he'd missed over the past two weeks.
Utterly helpless, Noelle wondered what her lips would look like after the kiss.
