"Don't worry," Hunter said coldly, turning his back on Laura. "You and Adam offer me no benefit at all."
It was clear that parents like them were useless.
Laura's vision went black with rage. She nearly fainted, and if Maxine hadn't caught her, she would have collapsed.
Brad and Mitchell, who had been watching the scene unfold with amusement, exchanged shocked glances. They never imagined Noelle would be entangled with the Haberkorns of all people.
Just then, Liam rushed in. Seeing Hunter walk away with Noelle without even sparing a glance for his mother, who was on the verge of fainting, Liam hurried after them. "Hunter!"
Hunter stopped, and Noelle halted beside him. When her eyes met Liam's, something about his face felt familiar, but she dismissed the thought. She turned to Hunter and said, "I'll wait for you over there."
Hunter's eyes softened instantly, turning misty and tender. He looked like a docile pup desperate for her approval. "Don't go too far."
The longing in his gaze, the way his attention clung to Noelle, left Liam shaken. In all their years growing up together, he had never once seen Hunter lean on anyone like this.
Noelle gave a small nod and strode off without hesitation.
The moment she was gone, Hunter's expression darkened. "Say what you want. If it's the same old excuse, save your breath."
Liam was completely thrown off.
How could Hunter's mood swing so fast? After all, he was still Hunter's brother.
"Hunter, Mom only wants what's best for you. Yes, she can be extreme, but she never meant to hurt you—"
"Stop."
Hunter's eyes grew even colder. "Is it really for my sake, or because she wants control over me? No one knows better than I do. You don't need to play messenger for her. I made myself perfectly clear just now. From this moment on, she and I have nothing to do with each other."
Liam's expression carried regret. "But no matter what, you're still a Haberkorn..."
Hunter cut him off. "I may carry the name, but Adam and Laura mean nothing to me. They already have a good son in you. Why drag me into it?"
With that, he turned and walked away.
His attitude toward the Haberkorns had never changed, though he treated Liam a little better. But if they thought he would forgive the Haberkorns and return to that family, there was no chance of that.
As Hunter's figure faded from view, Liam's face sank into quiet sorrow.
He couldn't understand how their once-whole family had crumbled into this.
…
Hunter had driven over by himself that day. The moment Noelle slid into the passenger seat, he leaned in under the pretense of fastening her seat belt.
