The next day, Hunter showed up with Bonnie to visit Noelle.
Knowing that Noelle was joining the modification challenge on Lola's behalf, he said, "The International Grand Prix isn't far off. At this critical point in time, won't you have less time for training if you join the challenge as Lola's stand-in?"
She revealed her inner plan. "I can't just stand by and watch Stonegate get humiliated by the Morianese. Besides, I'm not joining the challenge on Lola's behalf; I'm doing this as myself."
After all, she was the true Quake. Her original plan had been to force Lola into a corner, then appear as Lucy at the last second to save the day.
Yet, she hadn't expected Lola to be lucky enough to secure Asher's wholehearted, meticulous protection.
She'd calmly analyzed everything. "Plus, Lola might not necessarily get off scot-free this time."
Hunter looked at her and immediately understood what she meant. If Noelle took down Team Moriane in the challenge and acted arrogantly in front of them, they would surely come looking for payback. When that happened, Lola would be the perfect target.
He quietly declared, "I'll be at the venue with you then." That way, he'd know right away if she was in any danger.
Noelle didn't refuse. "Sure."
Just then, Bonnie handed her a race car model. "Look, Mommy! The fixed Cherry Pie looks exactly the same as before, and you can't even tell it was broken."
The race car model Zayne had ruined had been successfully restored. Noelle examined it and was satisfied with the outcome. "If you like it, I'll get you another model next time."
Without standing on ceremony, Bonnie beamed. "Thank you, Mommy!"
Hunter didn't stay long before leaving with Bonnie. Team Moriane had set off, and the modification challenge was about to begin. He came because he was worried about her at such an important moment, and seeing her doing fine put him at ease.
That night, Noelle transformed into Lucy again and headed to the reception jointly hosted by several racing associations in Stonegate.
Lola was resting in bed, but she wasn't paralyzed or comatose. Being in a wheelchair wouldn't stop her brain from functioning, and it could even gather a wave of sympathy.
As the corners of Noelle's lips curled into a smile, she said, "Quake once completed Rella's modification in the shortest time possible. Many say her brain's like a high-speed machine.
"Someone like Quake wouldn't easily give up a challenge, even with physical conditions. But now, she's readily given up the chance to fight for the Miller family's glory because of a car crash. Looks like your feelings with Quake don't run that deep, Mr. Miller."
Asher naturally detected the malice in Noelle's words and looked somewhat awkward. "She's my girlfriend, so her recovery matters more than anything."
Deep down, he began wondering if Lola had played a last-minute retreat on purpose.
Given Quake's ability, she just had to push through a little to join the challenge, since her injuries weren't that severe. Yet, she'd agreed to his spending 500 million dollars on hiring a stand-in.
In that moment, a seed of doubt took root in his heart. He began wondering if Quake, or perhaps Lola, liked him at all.
