Too Good for You The Ex-Wife You Lost novel Chapter 91

Maxine instinctively raised her hand to shield her face. The blinding headlights quickly dimmed, but several more cars followed behind. A group of people poured out of the vehicles, nearly surrounding the task force's compound.

Xavier wiped the sweat from his brow, wondering what big shot they'd mess with this time. A heartbeat later, the driver of the sports car stepped out.

It was a tall and lean figure that exuded cool defiance.

Maxine's eyes darkened. "Albert Hamilton, the heir of the Hamilton family?"

The heir of the Hamilton family, one of the scions of the Big Four, was an infamous troublemaker. He was chaos incarnate, unruly, and bowed to no one. What was he doing here?

Maxine had a bad feeling.

Albert glanced around, his expression frivolous. "Well, am I early or late? Are all of you here to pick up the boss?"

Everyone was rendered speechless.

Maxine's expression twisted into something unreadable, but Xavier quickly jumped in. "May I ask who exactly you're here for, Mr. Hamilton?"

"I'm here to pick up my boss, Noelle Quinn."

Albert flicked his eyes lazily toward Xavier and fished out a document from his pocket. "Here. This is the investigation protection order issued by the supervisory headquarters. You recognize this, don't you?"

Xavier choked on his words. The investigation protection order issued by the supervisory headquarters was valid nationwide. He was just the head of a municipal task force. He had no authority to stop them!

"Of course, I do."

Xavier quickly reached for the document and turned toward Maxine. "Since headquarters has issued the protection order, shall we conclude the investigation, Ms. Clarkson? We should release her."

Anyone granted the protection order was a nationally recognized talent. The rumors didn't matter. If Noelle's life was under threat, they were obligated to ensure her safety.

Maxine's gaze grew cold. She examined the protection order and confirmed that it was genuine. She looked at Albert. "For you to personally show up with a protection order… Is there something going on between you and Noelle, Mr. Hamilton? Could she be your sweetheart?"

She had to admit that she was dissatisfied and jealous! She'd said those words on purpose, hoping to rile Hunter up!

But Albert only stared at her as if she'd grown a second head. "And since when was my relationship with her any of your business?"

Then, he glanced at Hunter, visibly impatient. "Who is this person, Hunter?"

If Hunter barged in and word got back to his family, it would add to the malice directed at Noelle. And then, her suffering would only get worse.

Hunter froze in his tracks. Yet, he charged forward at the very next moment with no hesitation. Even if the Haberkorns sought to harm her, he would stand as her shield. He would hold her in his arms to keep her out of harm's way.

Inside the interrogation room, Noelle sat cross-legged to conserve her strength. She seemed hardly surprised to see a crowd storm in.

Hunter looked worried and distressed. Meanwhile, Jude carried the concern of a fatherly figure.

Albert, on the other hand, exploded into curses. "Those bastards caged you up and tortured you for an entire day! I'm going to blow this place up into smithereens and toss their asses to the curb!"

The moment the words left his mouth, Xavier rushed forward. "Calm yourself, Mr. Hamilton! Please, you mustn't! We were merely following protocol. Please have mercy on us!"

He then cast a desperate look at Maxine. After all, Noelle's interrogation was Maxine's responsibility. The task force was simply following her orders!

Maxine bit her lip. She knew that there would be no salvaging the situation if she didn't step in now. The Hamiltons were more than the Clarksons could handle.

So, she stepped forward. "This was all a misunderstanding, Mr. Hamilton."
