Julian’s study felt colder than ever, the kind of chill that seeped right into your bones. Miles stood in front of the desk, shivering, wishing he was anywhere but here. He never would have guessed that a simple background check would turn up something this wild. Dr. Astrid didn’t just resemble Julian’s late ex-wife—she was her.
Julian stared at the photo, fingers gripping the edge until his knuckles turned white. His eyes, usually calm, now burned with anger.
“Are you sure it’s her?” His voice was low and sharp.
Miles nodded quickly. “I checked twice. There’s no mistake.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, his expression growing colder by the second.
Five years ago, Madeline had been at the center of everything. Helene’s child was dead, and Madeline was gone without a trace. Back then, the two death certificates and the tiny, surviving child had convinced Julian without a doubt. He’d even felt a flicker of guilt for how it all ended. He’d made sure there was a grave for her and the baby who didn’t make it, and he’d treated Noah like his own, protecting him no matter what.
And now? She hadn’t died at all. She was alive, living in Country Y, and working as a doctor. She’d fooled everyone. Faked her death. Lied to them all. Disappeared and left her child behind. Julian’s anger only grew the more he thought about it. He pushed himself up from his chair, barely containing his fury.
“We’re going back to the hospital.”
Helene was just coming up to the door, ready to greet him with a smile, but Julian swept past her like a storm, not even glancing her way.
“Julian?” she called after him, confused.
He didn’t respond.
