His eyes went cold, and his grip tightened until Madeline thought her jaw might shatter. The pain was sharp enough to bring tears to her eyes.
She clenched her teeth, turned her face away, and knocked his hand aside.
Julian grabbed her again.
With a click of her tongue, she batted his hand away once more.
Julian’s eyes were burning with anger. He grabbed her by the throat and shoved her down hard onto the sofa.
“It’s been five years, Madeline. You’re still just as sharp-tongued as ever. I really underestimated you back then. Faking your death, making a fool out of me... Did you enjoy it?”
Madeline struggled to breathe and coughed.
“Julian, have you lost your mind these last few years? We’re divorced. We’re nothing to each other. Whether I’m alive or dead, what does it matter to you? You think I went out of my way just to mess with you? You wish.”
She made it clear he wasn’t even worth the effort now.
Julian’s anger only grew. “Wow, Madeline. You’ve got a lot of nerve. You made Helene lose her baby, then you faked your own death and ran off, living it up abroad as if you never felt a thing. How could you do this to me?”
Memories from that time flashed through his mind—the baby they brought him, the death certificates, the guilt he carried all these years.
Now, seeing Madeline alive and fearless in front of him, Julian felt like a complete fool. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to hurt her.
“I didn’t make Helene lose her child. Why should I feel guilty? You tried to have me killed over that, remember? I survived, but you’re upset to see me alive, aren’t you? You want to kill me now?”
She laughed, breathless. “Go ahead, Julian. Do it. I died once already. I’m not afraid to do it again. If you have the guts, finish me right here. If you don’t, remember this—one day, I’ll be the one to end you.”
