“Madeline!” Helene’s voice trembled with anger. “What did I ever do to your kid?”
Madeline yanked Helene closer by the collar. “You know exactly what you did, Helene. Every single thing you owe me, I’ll make sure you pay it back.”
Helene twisted, trying to break free. “Madeline, don’t you dare accuse me like that. Sure, I never liked Noah, but I wasn’t cruel. Those punishments had nothing to do with me.”
“Oh, nothing to do with you? Fine. Let’s go downstairs and ask Julian right now. Let’s see if those punishments really came from him or from you. Come on.”
Helene’s heart skipped a beat. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself. There was no way she could face Julian about this, not if she wanted to survive.
“Let go of me. I’m not going.” She jerked her arm away from Madeline’s grip.
Madeline stepped back, a cold smile on her lips. “Getting scared now?”
Helene gritted her teeth and straightened up. With just the two of them in the room, she dropped all pretense.
“Yeah, I never liked your son. I hurt him on purpose. So what? Madeline, you killed my child. I hate you. I hate him. Of course I wanted him to suffer. What are you going to do about it?”
Madeline clenched her fists. “You’re blaming me for your child’s death? Was it really me, Helene, or was it you who did it and tried to pin it on me? You know the truth.”
For so long, she’d wondered who would want to hurt Helene’s baby and why she was blamed so quickly. Then it all made sense. The baby Helene was carrying wasn’t even Julian’s. She was terrified of being found out, so she couldn’t risk having the baby. But losing it for nothing would be a waste. She had to get something out of it.
So she set Madeline up, making Julian hate her for the loss, forcing him to divorce her. Helene could use the tragedy to earn Julian’s guilt, and with everything lined up, he’d marry her. She’d become Mrs. Grayson, just like she wanted. In the end, Helene had squeezed every drop of advantage from that baby.
She was ruthless. Absolutely vicious.
Helene’s face went pale as she stared at Madeline.
