“Then… what else do you want?” Helene’s voice shook as she spoke. She knew exactly what Julian could do, and it scared her. Julian’s face was unreadable. “Losing your child and what you did now are two different things. You shouldn’t have taken your anger out on a child. He did nothing wrong.”
Helene looked at Julian, feeling a wave of helplessness. He was dead set on standing up for that kid. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself to sound steady. “Fine. I made a mistake. I’m sorry. I deserve to be punished. Twenty lashes. Is that enough?”
She bit down on her lip, hard enough to draw blood, and wiped the tears from her face. She tried to look tough, thinking, Julian might not love her, but he still cared. He wouldn’t actually hurt her. She just wanted him to see how sorry she was.
But then Julian raised his hand. Right away, a bodyguard brought over a whip and stood in front of her.
Panic hit Helene.
Was Julian really going to punish her? All for that bastard? Was that child really more important to him than she was?
Helene pressed her lips together, staring straight at Julian. She slowly reached out her hands, testing him. The bodyguard didn’t hesitate. The whip came down on her palms, sharp and merciless.
“Ah!” Helene screamed. Pain exploded through her, so raw and real it felt like her hands didn’t even belong to her anymore.
Julian’s brow twitched, but he didn’t say a word to stop it.
She searched his face for any sign of softness, but his eyes were cold. Her own heart trembled. She forced herself to hold out her hands again, and the whip landed once more.
This time, she didn’t scream. She bit down so hard on her lip she tasted blood, holding in every sound. Only a low, shaky sob slipped out. She was waiting, hoping Julian would give in and tell them to stop.
She shut her eyes tight, thinking back. Five years ago, she’d convinced Julian to make Madeline take that abortion medicine for her sake. Now, five years later, he was making her pay for hurting Madeline’s child.
