Julian wanted to go check on Madeline, but Helene clung to his arm, so he had to comfort her first. “Don’t be scared.”
In the shadows, Madeline’s eyes flickered. She took advantage of the darkness, grabbed a fruit knife from the table, and quickly cut through the ties on her wrists.
Miles burst in, flashlight in hand. “Mr. Grayson!”
Julian’s brow furrowed. “What’s going on?”
“Someone attacked the power system. I’ve already sent a team to fix it.”
“A hacker?”
Miles nodded. “We don’t know how many people are behind this. They might have other plans. You and Ms. Fortner should move somewhere safe right away.”
Julian’s cold expression only grew more severe. Someone actually had the nerve to stir up trouble in his own house. He pushed Helene forward, his voice low. “Get someone to protect her. And make sure there’s security on Noah as well.”
“Yes, sir.”
Helene grabbed his sleeve again. “Julian, can you come with me? I’m really scared.”
He turned, meaning to check on Madeline, but when he glanced back, she was gone. All that was left was his tie, sliced clean and lying on the floor.
Julian snatched the flashlight from Miles and walked the room, spotting an open door.
She used the chaos to escape?
“Madeline’s gone. Find her.”
Miles looked down, face tense. “Yes, I’ll send people right away.”
When the footsteps faded, Madeline crawled out from under the tablecloth.
“Mommy?”
She stiffened. “Who’s there?”
A small flashlight shone in her face. “It’s me, Oliver.”
