Brenda pulled out a chair and sat down, her face turning serious. “What do you mean?”
Madeline leaned in. “I just think this was a little too easy. Why would Tansy pass up working with a big company like Fortner Group and agree to help us so quickly, just because we know each other?”
Brenda’s expression darkened. Madeline was making a lot of sense.
Madeline frowned, her fingers tapping the table. “Better to stay alert. Helene and Raine see Scent Trace as competition. If we’re both after the same thing, they’re not going to let us win without a fight.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I’ll keep my eyes open tomorrow.”
Madeline nodded. “By the way, why don’t you come over for dinner tonight?”
“Absolutely. I haven’t seen Oliver in days. Let’s go together after work.”
Madeline pressed a hand to her forehead when she heard Oliver’s name. “It’ll just be the two of us. Oliver’s at Julian’s place.”
Brenda, halfway out the door, spun around and hurried back. “Wait, Julian took Oliver back? When did that happen?”
“No, it’s not like that. Oliver went to the Grayson family himself…” Madeline quickly filled her in on what happened last night.
Brenda grinned and gave a thumbs-up. “You two are seriously brave.”
“But you know, Oliver seemed so at home at the Graysons’. Like it wasn’t even his first time there.” Madeline looked genuinely puzzled.
Brenda waved it off. “Forget that for now. As long as they don’t find out, we’re good.”
“Julian didn’t seem suspicious last night. He probably won’t figure it out any time soon.”
…
After work, Madeline and Brenda swung by the supermarket to pick up some groceries for dinner. They chatted about nothing in particular, both trying to push work out of their minds.
Meanwhile, the Grayson family living room was complete chaos.
