Courtney let out a heavy sigh, yanked her hand free from Bill, and strode into the bedroom.

Bill looked between them, his eyes sharp and mean, finally locking onto Madeline for several tense seconds before he followed Courtney inside.

Madeline kept her face blank, lowering her gaze as she quickly wiped away a tear that threatened to fall.

Julian frowned at her, but didn’t say a word. He turned and walked into the room.

Helene’s injuries had already been taken care of, but she was still running a fever and looked exhausted. She leaned into Courtney’s arms, her shoulders shaking as she cried. “Mom, it hurts so much. I was so scared. I couldn’t find a way out. I really thought I was going to die…”

Courtney hugged her tighter, her own eyes turning red with worry. “I know, sweetheart, I know. Don’t be scared. I promise you, whoever hurt you is going to pay for it. They won’t get away with this.”

Helene’s whole body trembled as she sobbed. “I don’t get it, Mom. Why does Ms. Monroe hate me so much? I didn’t do anything to her. First she hit me, and even that wasn’t enough for her. She threw me in that awful place like I was nothing. What did I ever do to deserve this?”

She sounded so helpless, like the whole world had turned against her.

Julian’s frown deepened. “Are you really sure you didn’t do anything?”

He knew Madeline well enough. She never started trouble with anyone. If Helene hadn’t done something, Madeline would never touch her.

If Helene did provoke her, then honestly, he wouldn’t be surprised Madeline fought back. Lately, she was like a wounded animal, striking out at everyone, even him. If it was just a little fight, he wouldn’t care. But trying to really hurt someone was another story.

With Julian staring her down so seriously, Helene’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly shook her head. “No, I swear, Julian, I didn’t do anything. Really, I didn’t.”
