Julian didn’t go home. Instead, he ended up at a club, knocking back whiskey while Josh and Brady watched in silent alarm.
The tension around him was almost suffocating. He was in a foul mood, and it showed.
Josh and Brady squeezed into the far corner of the sofa, practically shivering.
“What’s going on with Julian? I haven’t seen him this pissed in ages,” Brady whispered, tugging at Josh’s sleeve.
Josh shot him a look and raised an eyebrow. “Why don’t you go ask?”
“Are you insane?”
Julian looked like he was moments away from burning the whole place down. No way was Brady going to put himself in harm’s way.
“Well, are you going or not?”
“Nope. Why should I? Why don’t you go?” Brady dug his heels in, not moving an inch.
“You know he likes you best.”
“Oh, sure. Likes me best for a beating?” Brady glared at Josh, making it clear he thought the suggestion was nuts.
Josh took a sip of his drink and smirked. “Bet you anything it’s Madeline again. Want to put money on it?”
“What makes you so sure?”
“It’s love,” Josh crooned, stretching the word out like he was about to start singing.
Brady almost expected him to break into a song.
“Come on, just ask him already. I’m dying to know.”
“Well, I’m not—”
Before Brady could finish, Josh gave him a shove.
“Damn it!” Brady stumbled and landed right at Julian’s knees, half-kneeling with a heavy thud.
The whole thing looked… awkward.
Julian finished his drink and looked down at Brady, his expression icy.
Brady caught that cold stare and felt his heart stop. He hurriedly pulled his hands off Julian’s leg. “Julian…”
Julian’s gaze swept over him, voice low and scraped raw. “What do you want?”
Brady opened his mouth, then closed it again. Great. What was he supposed to say now?
Josh had totally set him up.
“Nothing, my leg cramped up… Just an accident…”
Brady glanced at the empty whiskey bottle in front of Julian and winced.
It had only been a few minutes. That was an entire bottle, gone.
Was Julian trying to drink himself into oblivion?
“Julian, maybe slow down a little,” Brady tried, but Julian just opened another bottle and poured himself a fresh glass.
