Julian watched the open door, still digesting Madeline’s words.
She just said he took her child. Then after taking a call, she turned around and said she’d made a mistake.
A mistake?
What was that supposed to mean?
Did she really not know she had a child here with him?
If she didn’t know, then who was the child she was looking for?
She’d given birth to twins. One was here with him. The other, everyone thought, had died. But if Madeline only pretended she died back then, was it possible the other child’s death was faked too?
The twins looked exactly alike. Maybe she’d mistaken Noah for the other child, thought Julian had stolen him, and come rushing over to get him back.
But the background check he did on Madeline showed she’d been living alone these past five years. There was no sign of a child in her life. She’d come back to the country by herself, too.
Julian frowned, feeling something was off, but he couldn’t figure out what.
None of this made sense.
A housekeeper brought Noah in. The boy looked at Julian with that same distant look he always had. “Dad, you wanted me?”
Julian looked up. For a second, seeing Noah’s face, he lost his train of thought.
Noah just stared back. When Julian didn’t answer, he asked again, his voice flat. “Dad?”
“Yeah.” Julian looked away. For a moment, he’d thought Noah looked exactly like him.
He rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.
Madeline had completely messed up his thoughts. He was more annoyed than he wanted to admit.
“Dad?” Noah called softly again.
Julian let out a sigh. “It’s nothing. Just ran into a crazy woman. I’ve handled it.”
“Alright. I’ll go back to my room then.”
Julian watched Noah leave, feeling more and more troubled about the way the boy was growing distant from everyone, himself included.
