A cold, almost mocking smile played at the corners of Madeline’s mouth. “Why?” she asked, though she already knew the answer.

After her mom disappeared, her father Drew wasted no time moving his mistress and their illegitimate daughter into the house, taking everything that had ever belonged to her mom. Madeline had been just a kid, but from that day on, Drew barely even acknowledged her. Years of silence, years of pretending she didn’t exist, and now, suddenly, he was calling her home. It was obvious this had everything to do with what happened last night. The security footage had caused trouble for Raine too, so of course she’d already gone home, sobbing and playing the victim. Drew only ever called when he wanted her to pay for Raine’s problems. Madeline was used to it by now.

“You really have the nerve to ask why? Don’t you remember what you did last night? Your sister came home with her face all swollen. Instead of standing up for her, you actually helped a stranger slap her. Madeline, why don’t you just go to hell?”

Madeline had known her father hated her since she was little. Hated her so much that if Raine was even slightly upset, it felt like Madeline was supposed to make up for it with her own life. But back when her mom was around, things had been so much different.

Suddenly, someone snatched the phone from her hand.

“Stupid old jerk! You use your wife to get ahead and then turn your back on her. You deserve to choke on water, get food stuck in their throat, or get hit by a car every time you step outside.”

Drew didn’t even have time to respond before Brenda hung up the call. She tossed the phone onto the sofa and rolled her eyes. “Why waste time talking to that idiot father of yours? You trying to shorten your own life?”

Madeline gave a small smile. “No matter what he says, it can’t hurt me, so I just let him talk.”

Brenda raised her brows. “That’s actually pretty smart.” She changed the subject. “Are you going to work today?”

“I need to stop by the Monroe house first.”

“What? You’re actually going back there?” Brenda stared at her like she’d lost her mind. “You know those people will eat you alive. You really want to go back and get bullied all over again?”
