About ten meters from Madeline, a black SUV rolled to a stop. A small kid hopped out, and the driver's window slid down. The man inside wore a black dress shirt, his arm draped casually over the window. His eyes were sharp and a little mischievous. “Hey, kid. Your mom’s kind of hopeless, you know. Why not stick with me instead?”
Oliver stuffed his jacket into his backpack and snorted. “Sure, but only if you call me boss. We'll take on the world together.”
The man just lifted an eyebrow and let out a lazy laugh. “You? Think you can boss me around? Careful or I’ll tell your mom you got in trouble at school again today.”
“And I’ll tell my mom you took me to a bar last night.”
The man’s face twitched. The next second, both of them broke into grins and shook hands, like they’d just signed a secret pact.
“So, if our secret ever got out, how many times do you think your mom would chase us down?”
“Which means,” Oliver nodded, “she can never find out.”
“That’s what I like about you. Always one step ahead.”
“I’m outta here.” Oliver tossed the words over his shoulder as he headed off.
Casey smirked, his voice falling back into its usual lazy drawl. “See you.”
Oliver bounced toward the hospital, his backpack bouncing along with him. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a familiar car parked by the curb. It was Madeline’s. He was just about to wave and call out when he froze. There, in the backseat, was another little boy sitting in his old car seat.
And that boy looked exactly like him.
Oliver stopped in his tracks, completely stunned. Before he could move or say a word, he watched his mom drive away, the strange kid in the back.
Suddenly, a strong hand yanked him up by the back of his collar.
His little legs kicked helplessly in the air. “Hey! Who are you?”
“Me. Your dad.”
“Why are you calling my dad? Maybe I’m your dad!” Oliver kicked his legs and glared, twisting around to see a cold, serious face staring back at him.
“Look at you, all grown up after one trip out.”
