“Mrs. Grayson?” Helene blinked in surprise.
Lucy gave her a gentle, tired look. “I know you’re upset. Honestly, I am too. But Julian’s already angry. Making more of a scene isn’t going to help anyone. Helene, sometimes you just have to wait. Not everything can be rushed.”
Helene nodded, quick to agree. “You’re right, Mrs. Grayson.”
The crowd finally began to scatter. Julian’s gaze, cold and unyielding, stayed locked on Madeline.
The two of them faced off, neither willing to look away.
“When are you ever going to learn to compromise?” Julian’s voice was sharp.
Madeline just smirked. “Compromise? Sorry, not in my vocabulary.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed, his expression impossible to read. Without another word, he turned and strode toward the nearest restroom. He needed to wash the sticky coffee from his hands, maybe clear his head too.
As he finished rinsing off, he caught a glimpse of someone peeking around the corner. It’s a small figure, clearly trying not to be seen.
Julian frowned. It looked kind of familiar. He tossed his paper towel in the trash and stepped farther inside.
Noah had been hiding in the bathroom for ages, totally uncertain about what was happening outside. He’d wanted to sneak a look, but the second he spotted his dad at the sink, he panicked and ducked back into a stall.
Too late. Julian had already noticed him.
Before Noah could even shut the stall door, Julian pushed it open.
Noah froze, wide-eyed, staring straight at his dad’s not-so-happy face.
He was so busted!
“I told you to stay home and practice piano. Why are you here?” Julian demanded.
“I…” Noah’s mind went blank. He’d never been this nervous in his life.
What was he supposed to say? Oliver was still at home, and now his dad had caught him. He was definitely getting dragged back. This was it. Game over.
Noah clutched his shirt, fingers twisting the fabric. Suddenly, his smartwatch started ringing. He didn’t even dare look at it. He knew it had to be his mom.
He was doomed.
