“How about this,” Miles pleaded again, his voice soft and hopeful. “If it makes you uncomfortable, I can just go. Would that be better for you?”

Madeline’s lips curled in a wry smile. “Honestly, what’s the real difference between having one man in my apartment or two?”

Just then, Julian shifted a little, a faint crease appearing between his brows as he slept.

Miles practically shrank into himself, his nerves shot. He lowered his voice even more, staring at Madeline with pleading eyes. “Ms. Monroe, there’s really no other way, is there? If Julian wakes up now, everything you did tonight will be for nothing. Trust me, he’s out cold. He won’t wake up for a while, and you won’t even notice he’s here.”

He looked so sincere, so desperate, that Madeline couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. She glanced up at the clock on the wall. There really wasn’t another solution.

She pulled out her phone and set an alarm. “Fine. Be here at five tomorrow morning to pick him up.”

Miles let out a huge sigh of relief, like he’d been holding his breath for hours. “Thank you. I’ll be here right on time. Promise.”

Madeline glanced over at Julian on the sofa. He was completely still, eyes closed, his breathing deep and even. Turning back to her bedroom, she returned with a blanket and handed it to Miles. “And when you leave, make sure you close the door behind you.”

Miles took the blanket, looking genuinely touched. For all the things Julian had put her through, Ms. Monroe was still willing to help him out.

“Thank you, Ms. Monroe,” he said quietly.

He carefully draped the blanket over Julian, making sure not to wake him.

“You can go rest now, Ms. Monroe.”

Madeline just nodded and headed back to her room. After everything that happened tonight, she was exhausted. She set her alarm for four thirty and went straight to bed.

Once Julian was tucked in, Miles slipped out of the apartment.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Helene and Lucy were getting checked out. Helene was lucky, just a few scrapes and bruises, but Lucy wasn’t as fortunate. She had a mild concussion and still hadn’t woken up.
