Colton and Cormac looked up, startled to see Verena standing there. Colton's face immediately turned stony, and he looked away.
He wasn't thrilled to see Verena. The person he really wanted to see was his mom!
Oberon watched this unfold, momentarily stunned. What was going on here?
Verena was their godmother, but still, she was family. Why were they acting like this?
Verena, sensing the tension, quickly stepped inside. "Hey, you little rascals, what's with the attitude? I just got off work, haven't even had dinner, and I came straight here to see you. Are you mad at me? Upset that I haven't visited in a while?"
Oberon exhaled, relieved. It must be a little tantrum because they hadn't seen Verena for a while.
Verena turned to Oberon, "Why don't you rustle up some dinner? I'm starving, and I'm sure my two boys are too."
Godsons or not, to her, they were as good as her own kids.
Oberon nodded and headed out to the kitchen.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Verena turned back to the two sulking boys, "Are you really going to give me the silent treatment?"
Colton huffed, "I want my mom! You're not my mom!"
"Your mom asked me to check on you. If you keep this up, maybe I should just leave!"
"Really?" Cormac's eyes widened as he looked at Verena, "You talked to my mom?"
"Yep," Verena nodded. "She asked me to come by and said she'd pick you up in a couple of days."
"Does she not want us anymore?" Cormac's voice was tinged with doubt.
Hearing this, Verena felt a pang in her heart. She forced a smile, "Of course not, honey. She loves you so much. There have just been some things going on. So, for now, you've got me."
"I want to go home," Colton said firmly.
Verena chuckled at his serious expression, "But isn't this home?"
"No, it's not."
"You mean that old place you used to live? That rundown apartment?"
