Clara was pacing restlessly in her home, her thoughts churning with worry.
She was convinced that Emmett's mysterious illness was due to Leah's poisoning. But with no way to contact Elio and barred from visiting Emmett at the hospital, Clara felt utterly powerless.
She suspected Leah was not at the Melendez estate, so there was nothing she could do but wait.
Retreating to her room, Clara found Rose chatting on her phone with her parents. Upon seeing Clara, Rose hurriedly wrapped up the conversation and set the phone aside.
"Clara, you look like you've seen a ghost. Is it because of the young master's sickness?" Rose ventured, her voice filled with concern. She had overheard bits and pieces about the situation, but the specifics eluded her.
"Yeah," Clara frowned. "He's hanging by a thread, and I can't stop thinking about him."
"And after all he's done to you, you're still concerned?" Rose gave Clara a searching look. "That's love, isn't it, Clara?"
Clara felt helpless, unsure how to explain the depth of her feelings to the young girl. If it were not for the harsh realities keeping her in place, she would have dashed to the hospital without a second thought. She would have braved Patrick's or Sophia's hostility and Leah's schemes, all to see Emmett and assure him she had never betrayed him, that her heart had always been with him.
But did she even have the right to say these words to Emmett now?
Her hand moved slowly to her abdomen. The child she carried could not stay, yet she could not bear for Emmett to know. She had loved him and did not want his last impression of her to be one of utter revulsion.
Suddenly, Clara had an idea. She pointed to Rose's phone and said, "Could you... Could you let me make a call?"
