Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 469

Her words were barely out of her mouth when Newell clamped a hand over it, his eyes wide with panic.

"Are you out of your mind, woman? If someone overheard this kind of talk, it would be the end of us both!"

She glared at him, prying his hand off her mouth. "I wouldn't have said a thing if you hadn't pushed me into a corner! I've lived in fear all these years, guarding that secret family formula, and after you sold it to Leah, you didn't even give me a dime! My brother just wants to buy a house, for goodness' sake. Haven't I worked hard enough all these years, married to you? Hand over two million dollars, and we'll call it even!"

"Two million? As if that's chump change! What kind of house does your brother think he's buying? Tell him he can forget it. I'll give him fifty thousand dollars, tops, and that's only because of you."

She scoffed coldly, "What kind of house can you get with that? Fine, I don't need your charity. Keep your money. I'm not begging here. Don't think you can fob me off with scraps!"

With that, she turned to leave, but Newell caught her arm in a tight grip. "Where do you think you're going? If you let slip a word about the formula, it won't just be me who suffers—think about that! Do you think you won't get dragged down with me?"

She shook off his hand with a fierce jerk. "Dragged down? You have ruined my life already! I thought I married an honest man, but what do I get? A husband who's only good for drinking and gambling! Look at our home—everything we have comes from my family's charity! And now that you've got some cash, you can't even spare two million for my brother, while Leah's filled your pockets!"

Newell frowned, his gaze sharp. "What do you know?"

"I don't need to know everything. But I know you wouldn't hand over that formula if Leah hadn't paid you handsomely. You're only ever up before dawn for profit! Now let me go. If you won't help, I'll find someone who will."

His headache intensified. "And who would you go to? Are you planning on selling the formula?"

"That's my business, not yours!"
