Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 473

Leah turned on her heel to leave, her shadow stretching long and disdainful across the sun-drenched floor.

"Then why can't you just give him the final antidote? Let him be completely cured!" Clara's voice, urgent and fraught with emotion, trailed after Leah.

"Cure him? And then what, let you two live happily ever after?" Leah scoffed, her voice icy. "Let me tell you something, sweetheart. Even if Emmett were to drop dead this instant, there's no way I'd hand over the antidote unless he's mine. You're the only one afraid of him dying. What do I have to fear? If he's gone, every soul in the Melendez household will know that I am Aiden and Alex's biological mother. It'll make it all the easier for me to claim the title of Mrs. Melendez. Even as a widow, I'll still be queen of the castle!"

"You—you don't love Emmett. You're just in love with his status and his money."

Leah's laugh was short and devoid of warmth. "So what? What good does it do you to accuse me of this now? Instead of wasting your breath, why don't you figure out how to get Elio to come up with a solution? If he wants to save Emmett, he'll find a way. If he doesn't, then Emmett's as good as dead. My monthly antidote merely postpones the inevitable; there's a limited supply. If I run out and he's still poisoned, it just means he'll suffer a little longer before the end."

Clara, desperate, reached out to grab Leah's arm as she turned to leave. "No, please! I beg you! Whatever the cost, I'll convince Elio to save Emmett. Just don't cut off the monthly antidote, I'm begging you! If there's a way, Elio will agree to adjust the formula. He won't let Emmett die. He just won't! Right now, I'm trapped in the Melendez household, unable to leave. Can you find a way for me to meet Elio? I can't persuade him over the phone. I've already tried, and all he said was that he would do his best."

"Do you really believe 'his best' is good enough?"
