Under the Veil I Rule (Amara) novel Chapter 426

“…”

So he *had* heard everything. Amara sighed inwardly. “My father was just making conversation. Don’t pay any attention to it, Mr. Everly.”

Finnian fell silent, his handsome profile looking grim under the hallway’s dim lighting. An inexplicable pressure settled over Amara.

She pulled her arm free, rubbing the spot where goosebumps had suddenly appeared. “Mr. Everly, I should be going.”

“You’re going home?” Finnian asked, his voice low. “I’ll drive you.”

He started to walk with her toward the exit, but Amara shook her head. “There’s no need. I drove here, so I can get back on my own.” She dangled her car keys as proof, then turned and left without another word.

Finnian watched her go, then glanced at the darkening sky. It was getting late, and he didn’t feel right about her driving home alone. After a quick word with Larry, he also left the Sullivan estate.

He followed her car at a safe distance, watching until she pulled safely into her apartment complex. He lingered downstairs for a few moments before finally driving back to his own place.

As he pulled up to his building, he saw Emma waiting by the entrance. He parked the car and walked over, his expression flat. “Mom, what are you doing here?”

“What’s wrong with a mother visiting her son?” Emma’s tone was sharp. “Give me a key to your apartment. It’s ridiculous that I have to stand out here waiting for you every time I visit. I’m your mother, for God’s sake.”

She had been standing there for a while, shivering in her thin wool coat against the early winter chill. She had already sneezed twice.

“A key isn’t necessary,” Finnian said. “Just call me whenever you want to come over.”

“You—How can you be like this!”
