In recent years, Mr. Kevin Everly, growing older and more superstitious, had become careful to avoid words like “death.” The fact that he was using them now showed the depths of his fury.
Amara and Lisa, the head housekeeper, each took one of his arms and gently guided him back into his chair. “Grandpa, he’s not worth getting so upset over. Your health is what’s most important,” Amara soothed. “Please, just let it go. He’s always been stubborn; you can’t control him. And if you think about it, Liliana really isn’t that bad.”
She shot Lisa a meaningful look, and the housekeeper quickly retrieved Mr. Everly’s emergency heart pills. Amara continued to pat his back, listing all of Liliana’s positive qualities, insisting that Finnian would be happy. She had been terrified by his gasping breaths earlier, and all thoughts of her own heartache had vanished, replaced by a desperate fear for his well-being.
Slowly, under her gentle persuasion, Mr. Everly began to calm down. His eyes were red-rimmed as he gripped her arm, his voice thick with emotion.
“Fine,” he said, his voice raspy. “As far as I’m concerned, I don’t have a grandson anymore. It’s clear he no longer wants me as his grandfather.”
It was an empty threat born of anger. Amara knew he could never truly disown Finnian, the grandson he adored, but she didn’t point that out. Instead, she skillfully steered the conversation in a different direction.
As his breathing returned to normal, Amara and Lisa exchanged a look of relief.
Mr. Kevin Everly, who had been about to argue, thought of his own son and daughter-in-law. They were the very definition of a miserable couple. They would both be better off divorced. He sighed. “Well, at least let me introduce you to some good people. If you find someone you like, you can give it a try.”
Amara smiled. “Okay.” If he introduced her to someone, she would meet them. Whether she liked them or not was her decision to make.
Seeing her so agreeable, a stark contrast to Finnian’s infuriating stubbornness, Mr. Kevin Everly sighed again, a mixture of heartache and gratitude welling up inside him.
