Finnian glanced at her. “You haven’t forgotten why Grandfather won’t let you in the house, have you?” he said flatly.
The implication was clear: until that matter was resolved, Mr. Kevin Everly would not welcome her back.
Emma was rendered speechless, her jaw tight with suppressed fury.
Then, remembering her reason for coming, she swallowed her anger. “I’ve set the date for your wedding. It’s the third of next month, fifteen days from now. Is that date acceptable to you?”
Finnian didn’t even look at the calendar in her hand. “You don’t need to ask me about these things. Just decide.”
His indifference toward the wedding was palpable, and it annoyed Emma.
“What kind of attitude is that? This is your own wedding. Could you please show a little interest?”
A cold smirk touched Finnian’s lips. He looked at her sideways but said nothing.
Emma was exasperated, but she knew Finnian had already conceded a great deal. There was nothing more she could do. She clenched her fists, forced down her anger, and left.
When Finnian returned to the house, he found Mr. Kevin Everly had come out and was standing on the second-floor landing, leaning on his cane and looking down at him with an air of authority.
Finnian stopped in his tracks and called out, “Grandfather.”
Since the engagement news broke, Mr. Kevin Everly had barely looked at him. This was the first time in days.
Mr. Kevin Everly glanced at him. “What did your mother want?”
Finnian didn't lie. “She’s chosen a wedding date. The third of next month. She asked if it was okay.”
“Wait,” Finnian called out.
Amara turned back. “What is it?”
Finnian strode up the stairs and stood before her. “From now on, if you have the time, please come and see Grandfather often. Help me take care of him. I’m troubling you.”
Amara looked at him. “I will take good care of Mr. Kevin Everly,” she said. “Because he is my grandfather, too.”
A bitter feeling washed over Finnian.
She was clearly drawing a line between them. But he had brought this all on himself. He had no one else to blame.
