**Alpha Novel 387**
“All of your belongings are in Olivia’s apartment, boss,” Mike announced, his voice cutting through the murmur of the room.
Alexander offered a brief, distracted nod, though his gaze remained fixed on Jess and Olivia, who were engrossed in conversation.
Mike and Richard halted abruptly, their eyes widening in disbelief as they took in the sight of the two women chatting animatedly, as if they were lifelong friends.
“Woah, this isn’t at all what I expected to see,” Richard exclaimed, his voice laced with surprise.
“I was bracing myself for a showdown the next time they were in the same room,” Mike muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
With his arms crossed, Alexander let out a low chuckle, shaking his head slightly. “Women are peculiar creatures,” he remarked, his tone conspiratorial, meant only for Mike and Richard. “They can appear to get along splendidly, only to turn around and stab each other in the back. It’s a form of psychological warfare.”
After ten minutes of their incessant chatter, a smile crept onto Alexander’s face as an idea began to take shape in his mind. He snatched a bag of salmon-flavored cat treats and coaxed Cheese, the small kitten, from his hiding spot beneath Mike’s bed. With the kitten cradled in his arms, he strode back into the living room, positioning himself in front of the two women.
“Since your mother, Olivia, is too busy with her performance, I’ll take care of dinner for you, Cheese,” he declared, raising his voice for emphasis.
This proclamation shattered the illusion of their friendly banter. In Alexander’s eyes, both women deserved an Oscar for their pretentious act of civility. It was painfully obvious that they harbored deep-seated animosity towards one another.
Jess and Olivia’s faces flushed a bright shade of red, and they instinctively lowered their gazes to the floor, fully aware that their façade had been exposed.
Trying to lighten the atmosphere, Mike chimed in, “I’ve prepared a grand dinner for everyone!” His voice was overly cheerful, almost forced. “Who’s hungry?”
Jess flashed a strained smile at Olivia, a tension simmering beneath the surface of her grin. With an exaggerated flourish, she made her way to the dining table, as if she had lived in Alexander’s apartment her entire life.
Olivia bit her lip, caught in a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She was torn between the desire to stay for dinner and the need to maintain this charade of niceness with Jess. Her thoughts drifted to Alexander, recalling the warmth and comfort he had once brought into her life.
But at this moment, all she felt was a chilling emptiness.
