**Alpha Novel 389**
**Chapter 389**
The weight of impending heartbreak loomed over her like a dark cloud, casting a shadow on her heart. Olivia couldn’t fathom the thought of losing him.
“Are you feeling okay?” Alexander inquired, his voice cutting through the ambience of their half-finished dinner. “You’ve been unusually quiet tonight. That’s not the Olivia I know, the lively chatterbox,” he teased, a playful smile dancing on his lips.
Olivia mustered a smile in response, but it felt forced, like a mask she wore to conceal the turmoil inside. The lighthearted banter that usually flowed so easily between them seemed out of reach, slipping through her fingers like sand. She simply wasn’t in the mood for playful exchanges; her heart felt heavy.
Alexander’s heart sank as he noticed her silence linger. He swallowed hard, a lump forming in his throat. It was painfully clear to him that something was troubling her, yet he was at a loss for what it could be. He set his fork down, his gaze locked onto her, desperately trying to catch her eye. But throughout the meal, Olivia avoided his gaze, lost in her own thoughts, as if she were a million miles away.
When dinner finally came to a close, Olivia felt a wave of relief wash over her. Mike and Richard, eager to help, volunteered to tackle the dishes, allowing her a moment of reprieve.
“I’m just going to gather the rest of Cheese’s things,” Olivia announced, grateful for the excuse to escape for a moment, to breathe without the weight of Alexander’s gaze on her.
“I’ll unpack,” Jess chimed in, flashing a final smile at Alexander before heading to the guest room, leaving Olivia alone with her thoughts.
Once Olivia finished collecting the kittens’ belongings, she felt a gentle yet firm grip on her hand. It was Alexander.
“Let’s go downstairs,” he murmured into her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. The warmth of his breath against her skin made her heart race. “It feels a bit too… crowded in here for my taste.”
Despite every fiber of her being wanting to lean into him, to bask in his warmth, Olivia forced herself to take a step back, creating space between them. “Alexander, you can’t just move into my apartment,” she said, exhaling a resigned sigh. “My parents are planning to visit again soon. They know you’re my boss, and I wouldn’t know how to explain your presence there.” She paused, observing the way his body stiffened at her words. “You own so much property. Why not stay at that mansion you took me to, or one of your many apartments? Or even with your parents?”
In an instant, Alexander’s expression turned frosty, a chill settling between them. The bitter taste of betrayal lingered in his mouth, and he took a step back, the distance feeling like an insurmountable chasm.
