When Lemira returned to her dorm room, she noticed several bags on her desk.
Janice, her roommate, casually remarked, "Looks like your boyfriend sent you some stuff again, just like he used to."
Sure enough, Lemira's boyfriend had been known to send her gifts before.
She walked over and saw a few high-end shopping bags, one of which contained a pair of limited edition boxing gloves. In the past, a gift like this would have thrilled her.
But now, she just pushed the bags aside without even opening them. She knew she'd be sending them back in a few days anyway.
After a shower, Lemira lay back in bed and noticed an unread message on her phone. Her heart skipped a beat as she wondered who it was from.
Feigning indifference, she picked it up. It was a message from Orion: "Are you asleep?"
Lemira stared at the screen for a long time but ultimately didn't reply.
In her previous life, she had been betrayed by family, leaving scars that ran deep. She never imagined the man she trusted wholeheartedly could deceive her too.
Who could she trust anymore?
The next morning, the first thing Lemira did was check her phone.
She hadn't responded to Orion, and he hadn't sent any more messages.
Just then, a news notification popped up on her screen: "The Everhart heir is set to tie the knot soon."
Seeing this, Lemira felt a heavy weight on her chest, making it hard to breathe. Her eyes welled up with tears.
If he was about to be engaged, why was he still reaching out to her?
Did he plan on keeping her in the dark forever, casting her as the hidden mistress?
"Lemira, why are you crying?" Janice asked, quickly grabbing some tissues.
Lemira wiped her tears, her eyes red. "What if I’ve been the other woman all along?"
"What? You mean he has a girlfriend?" Janice exclaimed.
Lemira forced a bitter smile. "To be precise, a fiancée. They're getting married soon."
"That's outrageous! You should expose him!" Janice urged.
Lemira turned off her phone. "But he's not just anyone. If I expose him, people will just think I'm a gold digger."
Lemira knew the Waverlies had clout, but they might not stand a chance against the Everhart family.
If Stella helped, it could drag the Waverlies into trouble too.
Lemira steadied herself. "I'll let you know if I need it."
She needed to think things through.
——
After her morning classes, Lemira headed to the gaming club as usual.
Timothy happened to be there, and they teamed up for some dungeon raids.
Suddenly, she noticed a game notification: Orion had logged on.
[Your friend has requested to join the team.]
Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the request pop up.
