“It’s urgent,” Yosef cut her off and strode away.
Dozens of bodyguards waiting by the banquet hall doors fell in line behind him, a formidable procession that became the instant focus of the entire room.
Some recognized him, others didn’t. Those who didn’t simply saw a handsome man with a powerful presence and a massive entourage. But those who knew him began to whisper.
“Why is Mr. Nash leaving?”
“He probably couldn’t stand this sordid soap opera. It must have offended his eyes.”
“Mrs. Nash and Mrs. Sargent are close. Everyone thought their families would form an alliance. But now… it seems he has no interest in Henrietta at all.”
“An alliance between them has been off the table for a while, hasn't it? The Lelands are here, aren't they? Mr. Nash was with Britney Leland for over half a year. Even though they broke off the engagement, there are probably still feelings there.”
“Either way, the Sargent family has certainly suffered a blow to their reputation tonight.”
Britney’s eyes followed Yosef until he was gone before she turned to Joaquin. “Bro, so the reason Henrietta refused an arranged marriage was because she was dating a social climber? What an ugly scene. She’s completely disgraced herself.”
The Sargent family had never publicly announced Henrietta’s relationship with Matteo, only stating that she wasn’t interested in an arranged marriage, so few people knew about it. Coupled with Matteo’s need to maintain a single persona for his career, they had kept their love life private.
“From now on,” Britney said, swirling the wine in her glass, “no matter whose family she marries into, people will always bring up tonight. Whether she broke up with him over a forgotten birthday, was a gold-digger toying with him, or simply found someone new… well, that’s up for interpretation.”
“That’s enough,” said Holly, Britney’s mother.
Britney turned to Joaquin. “I’m just thinking about my brother. Joaquin, do you really want to form an alliance with her? Do you want to be the one to clean up this mess?”
