"Oh, Naomi's here."
Seeing her, the group mysteriously pulled her into the small conference room.
Their secretive behavior only made Naomi more confused. "Is there a meeting?"
Steven looked at their conspiratorial expressions and said with a wry smile, "Come on, guys, don't be like this. You're going to scare Naomi."
The others immediately straightened up, resuming their usual composed demeanors.
"We were just discussing a gift, actually."
"Wanna join in, Naomi?"
"A gift?" Naomi asked, her curiosity piqued. "Is there a special occasion?"
They smiled and lowered their voices. "It's the boss' birthday soon."
"Even though he doesn't like to celebrate, we should still show our appreciation. That's just how it is in the workplace. It's always good to be thoughtful, whether the boss likes it or not."
Lennon had a birthday coming up?
Naomi searched her memory and realized she had no recollection of this at all.
"Is he having a party at his house?"
The moment the words left her mouth, she felt foolish. If the Spencers were throwing him a party, how could she not have known?
Even if the Gonzalezes and the Spencers weren't particularly close, if an invitation had been extended, her family would have sent someone to attend out of courtesy. That was a social obligation they wouldn't ignore.
But the Gonzalezes had never attended a birthday party for the Spencers, which likely didn't mean they weren't invited, but rather that the Spencers never held one.
"Of course not."
Jacob said bluntly, "The boss rarely talks about his family. We think his relationship with them probably isn't great."
Naomi pressed her lips together. Definitely not great, she thought.
As an illegitimate son, he was lucky to even be allowed to live with the Spencers.
