“I doubt it.”
Jonathan analyzed the situation calmly. “It would only be a competition if Herbert were also throwing a party. But Lennon? He’s nobody. How could he possibly compete with Zebulon? The Spencers aren’t stupid; why would they stir up trouble like this?”
After Jonathan spoke, Carter agreed it made sense. He turned to Herbert. “You didn’t ask for more details?”
Herbert shook his head innocently. “The moment I heard they were throwing a party for Lennon, I walked out. I didn’t stick around to hear anything else.”
“I’m already sick of them bringing up Lennon all the time and constantly comparing us. Now that they’re openly favoring him, I have no desire to be at home.”
His friends understood completely.
In families like theirs, an illegitimate child was a stain on their reputation.
And Lennon, being a particularly outstanding one, was even more of a problem.
An illegitimate son, born of a low-class affair, was somehow more capable than them. This is utterly humiliating.
Herbert was already considered one of the best among their group, yet Lennon excelled beyond him—not just in looks, but in nearly every aspect.
Lennon had become a thorn in Herbert’s side.
To make matters worse, Lennon held a surprisingly high status within the family. Herbert had tried to undermine him a few times but had always ended up losing face himself. He couldn’t stand it anymore and had chosen to keep his distance.
While they still had contact, it was much better than the suffocating pressure of Lennon’s constant presence.
“Don’t worry about it. Let them have their party. The adults might show up out of respect for the Spencer family, but all of us will be at Zebulon’s birthday.”
“Yeah, exactly! Look, we’ve already drawn up the guest list.”
The conversation shifted back to Zebulon’s party.
Being young and creative, they quickly came up with several new ideas for the event.
Herbert’s mood had started to improve, but when he saw the invitation list for Zebulon’s party, he suddenly said, “I think my family plans on inviting Naomi to Lennon’s birthday party.”
