Lennon checked every room, having a maid check on the female employees. Once he confirmed everyone was settled, he returned to the media room alone.
He looked at the pair of cufflinks in his hand, placed them reverently back in their gift box, then arranged all the other presents he'd received around it. He put the cufflinks right in the center and took a picture.
A minute later, the man who never updated his Facebook suddenly posted a photo with the caption: [The most unforgettable birthday.]
On the yacht, Herbert's expression turned complicated as he scrolled past the post.
To Herbert, this older brother was an interloper who had appeared out of nowhere to steal his inheritance, living proof that his parents' marriage was a sham.
The fact that Lennon is a few years older is a source of shame for both him and his mother.
Although his mother was the proper, legal wife and he was the legitimate son, Lennon's return made it clear to everyone that Lennon's mother was the woman his father had truly loved. That made Herbert's high-society mother nothing more than the other woman who had won in the end.
Herbert had always despised Lennon.
But seeing Lennon's post, showcasing such a meager collection of gifts and calling it his most unforgettable birthday, stirred a complex feeling within him.
Thinking about it, this was indeed Lennon's first birthday since returning to the Spencer family.
And no one in the Spencer family had ever cared about his birthday.
"Herbert, what are you looking at?"
"You're good at slacking off, hiding out here. It's freezing in there, so I came out to get some fresh air too."
Herbert locked his phone screen and glanced back toward the main cabin. He jutted his chin. "Is it over yet?"
Jonathan sighed. "Not even close!"
"That Naomi really knows how to piss Zebulon off. She had the gift delivered and then just vanished. Not answering calls, not replying to texts, completely unreachable. Pulling a stunt like that on his birthday is absolutely mortifying for him."
"And you! You're so embarrassing! You saw her gift and couldn't wait to post on Facebook, telling Zebulon that Naomi was here. Zebulon searched the entire yacht and even delayed our departure, but he couldn't find her anywhere."
