After having breakfast with everyone, Naomi got into Lennon's car.
On the way home, Naomi switched off airplane mode.
Her phone began to vibrate violently as a flood of messages and notifications poured in, causing it to freeze.
It took a full ten minutes before her phone became usable again.
She first checked her missed calls.
They were all from Zebulon and his friends. Zebulon himself had called over two hundred times.
Her parents hadn't called, but they had sent messages this morning, demanding to know why she'd missed Zebulon's birthday party and asking where she was.
It seemed her parents had only found out this morning that she hadn't gone to the party.
Naomi found it faintly ridiculous.
Yesterday, when she didn't come home, her parents hadn't sent a single message. The moment they realized she wasn't with Zebulon, the messages started flooding in.
She never doubted that her parents loved her, but it seemed they loved the persona they had curated for her even more.
She felt like an NPC in a video game with a pre-programmed future. She couldn't make any unscripted moves without triggering a system bug, which would in turn provoke her parents' fury.
Naomi chuckled at the thought.
She must have been around games too much lately to be thinking in such terms.
The unexpected laugh dissipated some of the helplessness and anger in her heart. She sent a message to her parents saying she was on her way home, then turned off her phone screen and stared out the window, lost in thought.
At the Gonzalez family home.
"Naomi says she'll be back soon."
Mrs. Gonzalez looked at her husband, her face flushed with anger. "Don't you dare stop me this time. Naomi is still a young girl. She used to be so obedient, and now she's staying out all night and skipping Zebulon's birthday party. I'm going to teach her a good lesson this time!"
