Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 157

Naomi went rigid.

She shot a stunned look at her mother, a wave of hurt rising within her, which she quickly suppressed.

She had been so happy when her parents told her they would respect her wishes. She never imagined that just a short time later, they would change their minds.

And this time, they were making a decision with Mr. and Mrs. Hughes without even consulting her.

"Setting a date sounds like a good idea."

Mrs. Gonzalez didn't notice her daughter's pained expression and continued talking with Mrs. Hughes.

Mrs. Hughes chuckled. "Zebulon is just too immature. He's about to graduate from college, and all he thinks about is having fun. At his age, his father was already helping manage the company."

Mrs. Gonzalez naturally defended Zebulon. "Oh, come now, our generation isn't ready to retire just yet. Let the young ones enjoy their youth. There's still plenty of time for them to have fun for a few more years."

"Exactly. I say, let's get them married first, and maybe have them start a family. Then the young couple can join the company, and we can retire, look after the grandkids, and go traveling. That sounds like a comfortable life."

Mrs. Hughes nudged her husband. "Don't talk nonsense!"

While it was one thing for the groom's family to bring up having children, the Gonzalez family was not some minor household. The two families weren't at the stage of pressuring them for grandchildren, especially when they weren't even engaged yet.

Mr. Hughes was clearly a little drunk, his face flushed. Realizing he had overstepped, he coughed and looked apologetically at Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez. "My apologies, I've had a bit too much to drink…"

Naomi's hands clenched into tight fists.

She looked expectantly at her mother. For Mr. Hughes to say something like that in front of everyone was inappropriate. Her parents should have politely excused themselves. To continue the conversation would make it seem like the Gonzalez family held their daughter in low regard.

At the very least, they should have changed the subject. After all, she and Zebulon weren't even engaged, let alone dating. It was not a topic for the parents to joke about.

But to Naomi's dismay, Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez simply smiled graciously, as if what was said about their daughter was of no consequence.

"Let's leave the young people to handle their own affairs. Our families have a strong relationship. If it weren't for these two being too shy to say yes, we wouldn't just be talking about an engagement—we could hold the wedding tomorrow."

Mr. and Mrs. Hughes laughed in agreement.
