Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 16

Naomi quickly finished her explanation. After the children shouted, "We got it, we got it! Let's go try!" and ran off in a swarm, she smiled and stood up.

As she hung the controller back on the machine, she turned and met the eyes of Lennon, who had been standing behind her for who knows how long.

Naomi instinctively asked, "Where's Ron?"

Lennon pointed to her side.

She turned and saw Ron diligently following the method she had just taught.

Forgetting Lennon for a moment, Naomi moved behind Ron to offer some sideline coaching.

Ron was initially resistant. He was still holding a grudge and wasn't ready to make up with Naomi just yet.

But when he saw that her method was actually working and the monster was going down quickly, his face lit up with excitement. "This is funny!"

Naomi smiled. As she straightened up, her back bumped into a solid 'wall.'

She glanced over her shoulder and saw Lennon take a discreet step back. "Sorry."

Naomi's mind went blank for a second, unsure what he was apologizing for.

Her silence didn't seem to register with him. He waited until Ron's game was over, then picked the boy up and carried him to a card game machine.

Naomi wasn't very good at this one, so she followed and watched a few rounds.

She noticed Lennon was incredibly skilled, defeating his opponents within just a few hands. Feeling inspired, she couldn't resist starting a game on the machine next to him.

First round, a crushing defeat.

Second round, another crushing defeat.

Third round, with defeat all but certain, Naomi hung her head, ready to give up. Suddenly, a hand reached out from behind her and covered her own.

The warmth of his palm was immediate, like being enveloped in cotton candy. She almost sighed in contentment.
