Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 161

Naomi kept her head down. The redness and swelling on her wrist had grown even more alarming, yet her mother had held her hand and talked for so long without even noticing the injury.

Naomi nodded sullenly.

Only after Mrs. Gonzalez got into Mr. Gonzalez's car and left did she go looking for Zebulon, intending to ask him to take her to the hospital.

It wasn't that she was overreacting; the pain was simply unbearable.

If she didn't get some ointment on it, it would probably look even more frightening by morning.

“Zebulon?”

The man who had been waiting for her just a moment ago was now nowhere in sight.

Naomi assumed he had gone to get the car, but after a full sweep of the parking lot, she couldn't find it anywhere.

Left with no other choice, Naomi pulled out her phone and called him.

“We're sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later—”

The robotic female voice from the earpiece made Naomi want to scream.

He had vanished in the blink of an eye and now wasn't even answering his phone. Naomi started to wonder if the aggressive, incessantly talking man had been a figment of her imagination.

Was this really her future husband?

Suddenly, Naomi began to question her own judgment.

Aside from what happened during the earthquake, what was there about Zebulon that was truly worth her affection and loyalty?

Four years of painful pursuit, of sacrificing all her dignity... and this was what she got in return?

Naomi covered her face and sank to the ground.

She felt like a fish gasping on dry land, the air around her turning into a poison that burned its way through her, making every breath a struggle against suffocation.

She couldn't understand why fate was so cruel. Just when she was ready to give up, all these obstacles had appeared, dragging her back into this gilded cage just as she was halfway out.

Her eyes burned until she couldn't bear it any longer. Naomi blinked, and tears streamed down like rain.

The weather was perfect, yet she felt like she was trapped in an icebox, shivering from a deep, internal cold.

She trembled uncontrollably, wrapping her arms around herself for warmth.

“Naomi?”
