Naomi woke up in the late afternoon.
After such a trying day, she was exhausted. Sleeping in the car wasn't the most comfortable, but maybe because Lennon was there, she felt unusually safe and slept soundly.
When she opened her eyes, she was disoriented for a moment, unsure of where she was.
Then she saw Lennon sitting beside her, his eyes closed as if he were resting.
Naomi finally realized she had fallen asleep in his car.
They had arrived at the university a while ago, but instead of waking her, Lennon had just parked quietly.
He looked tired, too. His long eyelashes cast shadows under his eyes, giving him a look of fragile beauty.
It was the first time Naomi had ever been able to study him so openly.
Before, she had always been too nervous to meet his gaze. She knew he was handsome, but she hadn't realized how exquisite he was with his eyes closed.
Without his cool, distant gaze, he looked like a perfect work of art.
He was someone you wanted to reach out and touch, but at the last second, you’d pull back, realizing how fragile he seemed.
BZZZ BZZZ BZZZ—
The vibration startled Naomi out of her daze and woke Lennon from his feigned sleep.
He opened his eyes to see Naomi sitting flustered in the passenger seat, a blush on her cheeks.
Thinking she was still embarrassed about the misunderstanding at the hospital, Lennon spoke first. “It’s getting late. Why don’t we get something to eat before you head back?”
Without waiting for a reply, he added, “A boss can’t let his employees go hungry.”
Naomi had heard that excuse several times now, and it made her laugh.
In that moment, all her awkwardness seemed to vanish.
