Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 172

Tiffany's words trailed off as a thought seemed to strike her, and she lowered her eyes sadly. "Never mind, I probably shouldn't be saying these things."

"Don't feel too guilty about this. I'm sure if Naomi were here, she would have done the same thing."

Zebulon frowned.

"No, she wouldn't."

Remembering Naomi's recent attitude toward him, he scoffed. "If she were half as considerate as you, she wouldn't be fighting with me all the time. I don't even know what she's so upset about."

Tiffany laughed. "Girls just need to be coaxed. Isn't that what I'm helping you with?"

"Don't be ridiculous. Who asked for your help?"

The words slipped out, and Tiffany froze, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "So... you really don't want me around?"

Zebulon looked stunned. "Are you doing all this just to stay by my side?"

Tiffany gave a sad smile. "What else? Who would be foolish enough to help the boy she likes chase after another girl?"

Zebulon fell silent.

A war was raging within him.

As a Hughes, Zebulon had been showered with affection and high expectations from birth. Because that kind of attention came so easily, he had initially dismissed Naomi's affections.

To him, Naomi was no different from the rest of his family.

Especially since she was destined to be his wife, another member of the household.

She would be just like all the others.

Though he gradually saw Naomi's uniqueness as they spent more time together and his gaze started to fall on her, the fact remained: as long as she was the fiancée his family had chosen, she would always be on their side, another chain meant to bind him.

He didn't believe in true love. So when Naomi wanted to leave, he was only annoyed at being the one left behind, never truly understanding why he didn't want her to go.

But in that moment, something seemed to click for Zebulon.
