Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 184

"Naomi, let's not make rash decisions based on emotions, okay?"

"If Zebulon upset you, we can yell at him, we can punish him, but we can't act on impulse."

An icy numbness spread through Naomi’s body, and the feeling of suffocation returned. She looked at the people in the room and saw only grotesque masks. They were like monsters from a swamp, desperately trying to drag her down into the mire with them.

"I..."

Naomi’s lips moved, but no words came out. What could she possibly say?

In their eyes, her suffering was nothing more than a childish tantrum.

Although Mrs. Hughes paid lip service to Zebulon being at fault, every word was a plea for Naomi not to take it seriously, not to jeopardize the relationship between their two families over something so trivial.

Her pain meant nothing.

Clinging to a final shred of hope, Naomi turned her pleading eyes to her parents.

Surely, as her mother and father, they could empathize with their own daughter's pain. Even if they still wanted her to be with Zebulon, they should at least demand some justice for what she had endured.

Her mother continued to avoid her gaze.

It was her father, Mr. Gonzalez, who reached out and stroked her head with a pained expression. "Good girl," he said softly. "Zebulon is still unconscious, and you're injured too. Why don't you go home and rest for now? I'll have the maid make you something nice to eat. Get a good night's sleep, and we'll talk about this after Zebulon wakes up, okay?"

Naomi’s fluttering heart finally stilled, dead in her chest.

She wanted to laugh, a cold, bitter sound, but airing all her grievances and frustrations had drained her of all courage.

Faced with her parents’ expectant gazes, Naomi found she couldn't bring herself to say anything harsh.

She gave a weak nod, her eyes downcast. "I'll head home then."
