Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 186

Under normal circumstances, Naomi would never have asked such a personal question.

She had always felt their relationship wasn't that close.

But now, with a storm of unspoken thoughts raging inside her, she desperately needed someone to talk to. More than that, seeing Lennon waiting for her outside the hospital had confirmed her suspicion that he saw her differently. She didn't dare to ask for more, but she felt she should at least try to take a step forward.

As it turned out, Lennon didn't seem to think her question was strange at all.

He even took a moment to consider it before answering. "After I came back to the family, I didn't actually spend much time at the main Spencer estate."

"When I do go back, Ron is usually there to keep me company, so it's never uncomfortable."

Naomi raised an eyebrow. "But what about the others? Don't they give you a hard time? And Herbert—every time he sees you, he looks like he's smelled something bad. Don't you get angry?"

Lennon shook his head. "People who aren't worth my energy don't deserve my anger."

Naomi repeated his words under her breath, acknowledging their wisdom.

But then she thought of her parents, who were among those forcing her hand.

There was no doubt that Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez loved her.

Naomi never questioned that.

But she also knew that their love came at a price.

She had no choice in accepting that love, and therefore, no power to refuse its conditions.

"That's amazing. I wish I could be that detached," Naomi murmured.

"I think you're missing the point."

Lennon's voice pulled Naomi back from her thoughts.

"What?"

The light ahead turned red, and Lennon brought the car to a stop. He turned to face her, their eyes meeting.

"Freedom isn't something other people give you."

"If you don't like your environment, change it. If people treat you badly, find a way to make them stop."
