Patricia gave Naomi a puzzled look. “What is there to explain? Zebulon is openly humiliating you! The entire school knows how you feel about him. And your families are so close! Even if you didn’t like him, he shouldn’t disrespect you like this!”

Seeing Patricia so indignant, Naomi knew she’d made the right call by not telling her about how Zebulon had humiliated her over winter break and again today.

With Patricia's temper, she probably would have charged over there and started a fistfight with him.

“No, it’s not that. I don’t like him anymore. From now on, he’s free to do what he wants.”

All of Patricia’s anger instantly vanished.

“What?”

Naomi knew why Patricia was so shocked.

After all, she had loved him for so many years, and everyone had witnessed how devoted she was, how she would have given up anything for him.

For her to now say she didn’t like him anymore was like something out of a fairy tale.

But Naomi nodded firmly. “You heard me right. I really don’t like him anymore. And during the family gathering over the holidays, we made it clear we’re not getting married. The engagement is off.”

Patricia’s eyes widened.

Naomi thought she was about to ask if she’d lost her mind, giving up on a guy she’d loved for four years. Instead, Patricia pulled her into a massive bear hug.

She took the opportunity to squeeze Naomi's soft cheeks. “Yes! Yes! My girl has finally seen the light! I’ve been saying it all along, what’s so great about that Zebulon anyway? You never needed to put up with his crap. You’re gorgeous, you have a wonderful personality—you think you’ll have trouble finding a good man? Heck, if it comes down to it, I can introduce you to my brother!”

“Seriously, would you consider him? He’s a little rough around the edges, but he’s six-foot-three, loaded, and doesn’t sleep around...”
