Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 30

Hearing Naomi, Patricia immediately agreed. “Fine, let’s go. Wouldn’t want to be an eyesore. I, for one, can’t stand all this fake drama.”

Patricia took Naomi’s hand. Naomi gently patted her wrist and gave Tiffany a small smile. “Sorry, we can’t join you for lunch. Please, go on without me.”

Tiffany froze.

She had expected her performance to either make Naomi feel wronged or, at the very least, trigger an outburst.

After all, Patricia looked ready to commit murder.

It was impossible for Naomi to show no emotion at all.

And yet, Naomi was acting as if nothing had happened. How was that possible?

Could it be that she really didn't like Zebulon anymore?

Zebulon was thinking the same thing as Tiffany. He watched Naomi's flawless smile, a look that suggested none of what happened mattered to her—that the past was truly past. A deep annoyance welled up inside him, and his words turned venomous. “Naomi, stop playing hard to get. You think acting like this will make me beg you to eat with us? If you don’t want to come, then don’t. It’s not like you’re helpless. You won’t starve, will you?”

He meant the opposite, certain she would argue back. In the past, Naomi had always been so concerned about what he ate, terrified he’d get a stomachache from the wrong food.

He thought she would understand his real meaning, but instead, Naomi simply nodded in agreement. “You’re right. So please, don’t worry about me.”

Hearing her use the word “please,” a word that created a formal distance between them, a vein throbbed on Zebulon’s forehead. “Fine! You said it!”

“Don’t come crying to me when you want to eat with us again!”

With that, he grabbed Tiffany and stormed to his car.

The car door slammed shut. Zebulon floored the gas pedal as if venting his frustration, leaving Patricia and Naomi choking on a cloud of exhaust.

“Damn it!”
