“Don’t give up, Naomi.”

“Naomi, we’re going to be rescued.”

“Don’t be scared, Naomi…”

The voices in Naomi’s ears were a chaotic jumble, but one young, gentle voice kept echoing in her mind. She wondered why she was hearing it again, but then a sharp, searing pain shot up her arm and through her entire body. Tears welled up in her eyes as she whimpered in pain.

She felt a hand gently patting her back, comforting her, while someone else spoke nearby.

Naomi tried desperately to make out the words, but she couldn’t move. It was as if her consciousness had floated out of her body, but she was surrounded by a thick fog, unable to see where she was or what was happening.

Before she could process her confusion, she felt her consciousness plummet, and everything went black, as if she’d been locked in a dark room.

An unknown amount of time passed before the faint sound of voices woke her. This time, as Naomi listened intently, the words became clearer.

“She just needs plenty of rest…”

“Make sure she eats foods that help rebuild her blood supply…”

“It might affect her next period… the family should keep an eye on that…”

“Keep the wound on her hand dry. With regular dressing changes, it won’t leave a scar.”

“Luckily, it wasn’t too deep. If it had hit the artery, things would have been much more serious.”

Naomi processed the words, slowly realizing she must be in a hospital.

Her eyes fluttered open. She instinctively looked toward the source of the voices and saw a doctor in a white coat talking to a man dressed all in black.

The man had a perfect V-shaped torso, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His suit jacket was draped casually over his arm.

Naomi stared at him, her thoughts a jumble. Was there really such a handsome doctor in this hospital? And why wasn't he wearing a white coat?

Just then, the man turned, and their eyes met. For reasons she couldn’t explain, Naomi immediately squeezed her eyes shut.

Her self-deceiving act seemed to surprise him. A moment later, he said to the doctor, “I understand. Thank you.”

The doctor soon left.
