Patricia’s words nearly made Zebulon explode.
He had always known she had a sharp tongue. Back when people at school were calling Naomi his pathetic doormat, he’d thought the insults were harsh but figured it wasn't worth getting into a fight. People would gossip for a few days and then move on to the next thing, so he’d let it go.
He was shocked when he heard the next day that the main instigator had fallen and broken several teeth. He’d wondered how someone could fall so badly, only to find out later that Patricia had gotten into an argument with the guy. The guy had lost his temper, stormed off, and run straight into someone’s basketball, which hit him in the face before he landed flat on it.
Patricia had become a campus legend overnight. Her parting shot—How do you still have the nerve to stand here?—became an iconic line, especially since the guy had nearly been disfigured right after she said it.
Zebulon had told Naomi before to stay away from Patricia, complaining that she was turning into a shrew, but it was the one thing Naomi had stubbornly refused to listen to. He’d eventually dropped it, figuring they’d go their separate ways after graduation.
Now, however, he found Patricia’s presence incredibly irritating.
“This is your last warning. Stop acting so high and mighty in front of me. Don’t push me.”
Zebulon didn’t make a habit of getting physical with women and usually managed to restrain himself, but he was now convinced that Patricia was the reason Naomi hadn't come back to him yet.
That woman was infuriating. He had to get her away from Naomi.
“Do I look like I’m scared of you? Go on, try something. Let’s see if Naomi ever forgives you!”
Patricia snorted. “I’ve never seen someone so shameless. It’s your fault, but you refuse to admit it and try to blame someone else. You’re pathetic!”
Zebulon's face was livid. He wanted to retort, but Patricia had already stormed off.
Left with no outlet for his anger, he furiously pulled out his phone and made a call.
“Find out who Naomi has been in contact with recently.”
He hung up without waiting for a response. Staring down the now-empty, tree-lined path where Naomi had been, his eyes darkened with an unfamiliar mix of frustration and anxiety.
This fight had dragged on for too long. Zebulon decided that if Naomi just took the first step and talked to him, he’d meet her halfway and make things right.
