The team-building event was a huge success. Naomi had assumed her colleagues were typical programmers, buried in their work and oblivious to everything else, but they turned out to be witty and fun—nothing like the nerdy stereotypes.

After the barbecue, everyone was about to move inside for some board games when Naomi's phone rang. She glanced at the screen, a flicker of annoyance crossing her face.

"Sorry, I need to take this."

Naomi stepped outside with her phone.

She'd hoped that if she ignored the call, they'd give up, but the person was persistent, calling a second time right after she didn't pick up.

Naomi sighed and finally answered.

"Naomi, where are you? Why weren't you answering my calls?"

It was Zebulon, his voice demanding and self-righteous.

Naomi kept her voice low. "I told you I had a team event today."

Zebulon paused, then said dismissively, "Oh, come on. A team event with a new company you barely know? What's so fun about that? Besides, you're only a sophomore. Those guys are all old pros who've been working for years. Aren't you worried they'll take advantage of you?"

"Anyway, enough of that. Hurry up and come meet us. We're going out. Where are you now?"

Naomi resisted, not wanting to go. "My thing isn't over yet..."

Zebulon cut her off. "Don't be like that. We're all here to celebrate your new internship. Are you really going to be a buzzkill?"

Naomi was speechless.

She had never asked them to celebrate for her. Besides, she'd been working for a while now. Why the sudden urge to celebrate after all this time?

She already despised hanging out with his friends. She'd only done it before to spend more time with Zebulon, but now she had no desire to deal with those rich kids.

But she knew she couldn't refuse.

"I'm at a retreat in the suburbs."

Zebulon laughed, pleased. "Perfect. We're downtown. Just head to that mall we always go to and wait for us there."

"We'll be there soon."
