She was willing to compromise.
But Cedric, instead of feeling satisfied, felt a dark mood descend upon him. She was willing to endure even this humiliation just to get a divorce?
His dark eyes narrowed, his thumb stroking the face of his watch. After a moment of contemplation, he said coolly, "In addition to that, until you bring her back and we are divorced, you will fulfill your duties as a wife."
Liliana's throat felt tight. It was Saturday. That meant she would have to go with him back to the Forrest family estate.
So be it. The divorce wasn't final yet, and if she made a scene and alerted the Forrests, it would only become more difficult. They had always been kind to her, but she had no idea how a family of their stature viewed infidelity. What if they reprimanded Cedric, told her it was for her sake, and then urged her not to divorce? She couldn't risk being trapped in that position. It was better to keep it quiet for now.
But her patience was wearing thin. She looked at the handsome man before her, and every second in his presence was an agony—a battle between the fluttering of her heart and the ache of its breaking.
Cedric saw the look on her face, as if she were the one being grievously wronged. He tapped his knuckles on the desk. "I'm not forcing you. If you don't agree, you can take your papers and leave."
"I agree," Liliana said, then confirmed again, "But you have to promise me you will sign them when the time comes."
Her eagerness to be rid of him sparked an unfamiliar yearning in Cedric. He couldn't stand her defiance. He wanted her to look at him the way she used to, with stars in her eyes.
He hedged, his voice noncommittal. "If you insist, I see no reason not to."
That evening, Cedric arrived just in time for dinner. At the table, Dowager Forrest kept piling food onto Liliana's plate. "Have you lost weight? You look thinner."
At that, Cedric leaned back and glanced at the woman beside him. Liliana sat next to him, a faint floral scent clinging to her. Her waist, already slender enough to be encircled by one hand, did seem even smaller. But the curves elsewhere were still as full, perhaps even more so than before. Cedric's breath caught, and his gaze traveled up to her delicate chin.
"I haven't lost any weight, Grandma. It's probably just the thick clothes for the cold weather," Liliana lied. She had lost weight. Her trousers from last fall were now loose on her. It had happened over the past few months, ever since she'd brought up the divorce. She couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. But she didn't want to worry the dowager.
"My eyes are a ruler," Dowager Forrest declared proudly. She turned to Cedric. "Tell me, has she lost weight or not?"
