Wild Nights With My Brother’s Ex-Best Friend novel Chapter 115

NICOLE

Once Mason and lare dropped off in Richard’s parking lot, which is where our car is, we watch as John’s guy drives away with growing despair.

“That’s it,” Mason says in a low voice as he heads to the car. “That’s fucking it. We’re going back to our hotel and we’re gonna get the fuck out of here. We should never have come here! I don’t know what we were expecting.”

“Mason.

“1

He ignores me.

“Mason,” I say again, more forcefully this time around. “We can’t go!”

This makes him finally stop to look at me. He looks pissed at what I’ve said. I continue, “What about my meeting with my biological father? It’s tomorrow evening!”

“You’ve got to be fucking with me, Nicole. There’s no way around it,” he says angrily. “Did you see what happened to us? Did you? Do you know how bad things could have gotten?”

“But we’re here, aren’t we? There’s no point in going back home without answers.”

“Fuck that,” he grits out. “I’m older than you, so | get to fucking decide. We’re going home. Like right now!”

“No! It’s one more night! What difference does it make?

Mason chuckles, his anger getting the best of him now. He then runs his fingers through his hair and tugs at the roots like he wants to rip his hair right out. “You’re going to drive me insane, Nicole. There’s no way you’re saying this. Listen to yourself!”

I fold my arms. I know he has a point and if I were smarter, I’d definitely be running back home. What happened with John could be a sign that things with The Bruiser won t work out the way they should, and why would they? His name is The Bruiser, for crying out loud.

I know what he does to women. What he did to Ma.

So, why am I doing this?

Mason keeps looking at me, waiting for my decision. John told us to leave and never come back, and after this meeting with my biological father, I definitely wouldn’t look back.

I have no idea what to expect. It was clear from the start that this was a bad idea.

But to give up now? That doesn’t sit well with me at all.

“You want to do this?”

I nod, saying nothing. Mason turns around, muttering something under his breath that I don’t catch. I join him in the car, and the drive to our hotel is silent and riddled with tension. He has his right to feel like I’m a total idiot for doing this.1 don’t blame him.

But giving up doesn’t come easy to me. Tomorrow

evening, I’ll find out whether or not this stubbornness will pay off.

I don’t steep all night, and neither does Mason, by the looks of it. I wish we could spend the night talking about how disappointing this trip has turned out to be so far.

Now I see why Donna told us to stay away from him.

He’s a criminal, that much is clear.

Hell, he shot a man right in front of us!

I’m not going to forget that anytime soon. I wonder who he was. Maybe he was an innocent who was just driving by. John Monroe…I don’t think anything Ma said about him to Katie was a lie.

If he’s a criminal now, then he couldn’t easily have been a gambler back then. This life of crime never left him, so what are the chances that Ma wasn’t fully honest with Katie?
