If it weren't for the recent distractions with Faraday's death and Brinley's delivery, she would have sent a matchmaker to the Farley family long ago.
"Why don't you wait until you actually have the right to give me that warning," Starla said, pausing for effect as she watched Xenia's face turn a shade of purple. Then, she added with a sweet smile, "Because right now, you're nothing but a clown."
"Starla, you've gone too far!" Xenia shrieked, completely losing her composure.
Just then, the elevator doors opened on the first floor. Consumed by rage, Xenia stormed out, unable to stand another second in Starla's presence. When had that damn woman's tongue become so sharp?
...
In the parking garage, Garret pushed Starla's wheelchair out of the elevator. Starla seemed to be in a good mood.
"That Xenia… I doubt she's Mr. Farley's type," Garret commented.
"That's none of our business," Starla replied with a slight smile. She was grateful for Herbert's help with the Brinley situation, but she wouldn't presume to judge his personal life.
Garret's phone buzzed with a new message. After reading it, he informed Starla, "Brinley went to see Harriet just now, but it seems Harriet has no time for her."
"As it should be," Starla said coolly. "Turn up the heat on Brinley's end as well."
"Yes, Miss," Garret nodded.
They reached their parking spot, but just as Starla was about to get into the car, a dozen bodyguards swarmed out from the shadows, surrounding them completely.
Starla recognized the man in the lead; he was one of Fairfax's top security personnel, someone who always accompanied him to major summits.
Enraged, Garret shoved him back hard. Caught off guard, Fairfax stumbled into his own men. The atmosphere turned glacial. In an instant, Garret had his gun drawn and aimed directly at Fairfax.
"Fairfax, back off."
Seeing the gun pointed at him, a dangerous glint flashed in Fairfax's eyes. "What are you all standing around for? Get them!"
This was Marina City, his territory. Did this man really think he could threaten him here?
At his command, chaos erupted. Garret and Herbert's two men were outnumbered more than four to one; Fairfax had clearly come prepared to take Starla back by force. The parking garage descended into a flurry of motion and violence.
Through it all, Starla watched Fairfax with ice-cold eyes. He strode toward her, lifted her from the wheelchair into his arms without a word, and carried her to his car.
