A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 167

Fairfax’s expression was grim. Darleen sank into the chair beside his bed. She tried to hold her tongue, but the question burst out of her. "So when's the divorce?"

After everything that had happened, she couldn't imagine her son would still refuse to end the marriage. If he did, she'd have to conclude that Starla was some kind of witch who had him under a spell.

At the mention of divorce, Fairfax’s face hardened. "When did I ever say I was divorcing her?"

Darleen’s face fell. "You're still not divorcing her? After all this?"

"The reason we've reached this point has nothing to do with us," Fairfax said, his voice cold as steel. He looked at his mother, his eyes devoid of warmth. "You all know exactly why."

"Are you blaming me?" Darleen asked, aghast.

"I'm a married man. I have my own home. If you have nothing better to do with your time, why don't you go play cards or visit a casino with your friends?"

His words were a clear rebuke. Darleen's face flushed with anger.

"Are you saying I'm meddling?"

"Aren't you?"

"You…" Darleen stood up abruptly, fuming.

Was this really her son? He was going to be the death of her.

"You are infuriating!"

Furious, Darleen stormed out of the room. She couldn't stay a second longer, or she was sure she'd have a stroke. Once she was gone, Fairfax closed his eyes.

"Make a call," he said to Gabriel. "Make sure she isn't harmed."

The fact that Fairfax was still so protective of Starla drove her insane. The woman tried to kill him! What was there left to protect?

"It's already been arranged," Xenia confirmed.

The moment Starla was taken from Luwood Mountain, Xenia had made the call. It was a golden opportunity. With Starla in their grasp and Fairfax not rushing to her rescue, how could they not make her suffer?

"He still treasures her, even after she poisoned him," Darleen muttered, shaking her head in disbelief. What mother could stand by while a woman so clearly despised her son? Starla had nothing when she married into their family; the Yelchins had given her everything. And this was how she repaid them—like a viper they had nursed back to health.

Xenia smirked. "Don't worry, Mom. I can only imagine how miserable she is right now."

Darleen nodded grimly. "Only after she's been thoroughly tormented will she realize that living in the Yelchin household was like living in paradise."

"I've taken care of everything. Don't you worry," Xenia reassured her.
